MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS FOR VETERANS

Co-Occurring Substance Abuse

Co-occurring substance abuse disorders are complex illnesses that can be difficult to treat properly. We understand this complexity and strive to treat it through a clear, specific diagnosis, individualized treatment plans and a combination of therapeutic modalities. Our co-occurring substance abuse disorder treatment in San Diego addresses substance abuse within the framework of its co-occurring mental health disorder.

This approach ensures that the underlying causes of self-destructive behaviors are properly identified and addressed, helping create a long-lasting recovery that ends self-destructive cycles and helps veterans build lives that are stable and fulfilling.

Symptoms

It is a natural human instinct to want to escape from pain, whether physical or emotional. However, when this desire leads to alcohol and drugs that self-medication leads to substance abuse.  This can cause disastrous consequences for the individual, their loved ones, or anyone around them. Symptoms of substance abuse include the following:

  • Routine heavy use of the substance, even when used causes negative penalties for the self or others
  • Needing increasingly large and/or strong amounts of the substance to get the same effect
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not using
  • Arranging life plans and activities around the chance to use
  • Use disrupting social, family, school, work, or financial obligations
  • Behavioral or mood changes

Substance abuse is particularly serious for those with pre-existing mental health disorders. Those with mental health disorders are more susceptible to substance abuse and abuse can aggravate co-occurring disorders.  Left untreated, the two can feed one another, leading to self-destructive or otherwise dangerous behavioral cycles.

Treatment for Co-Occurring Substance Abuse

Additionally, co-occurring substance abuse disorders can be difficult to diagnose.  Substance abuse can cover up or exacerbate mental health disorder symptoms, making it hard to tell which symptoms are caused by which illnesses.  This makes it difficult to properly treat both the substance abuse and the mental health disorder.

At Solara Mental Health, we understand that a clear diagnosis is vital to recovery from co-occurring substance abuse disorders.  With a clear diagnosis comes a treatment plan that can fully address the co-occurring illnesses and build the foundation for a lasting recovery. Our mental health treatment center’s carefully supervised drug and alcohol-free space provides a safe area away from the day-to-day stressors and habits that can trigger substance abuse.  This is an important first step in the healing process.

Our expert psychiatric clinicians will use a variety of therapeutic modalities to address symptoms and their underlying causes, allowing the patient to develop and practice skills that can be carried into everyday life after the program. Through this, veterans can begin to heal from past pain and move forward with lives that are stable, joyful and free.

While our veterans make considerable and rapid improvements, substance abuse disorder is often a long-term condition. Through years of experience, our mental health treatment center has learned how to provides the entire spectrum of care for our veterans.  From inpatient to outpatient, from transitional living to a long-term aftercare plan, our program has been designed to free our veterans from the clutches of substance abuse disorder.

R.M. – Father

If not for Solara Mental Health, I am almost positive that our daughter would not be as advanced in her treatment, and would not have the almost miraculous confident and positive outlook that she has.

M.P. – Father

Your program provided our daughter with the most masterful therapist we have ever encountered (and we have used many).  She has had an unbelievable ability to see the long-term trajectory of our daughter’s treatment and to approach her treatment in stages that fit where my daughter’s development was.  We can’t say enough positive about her.
