Understanding Bipolar Disorders
The mood swings and instability that characterize bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, almost always have devastating effects on one’s emotional and practical functionality. Approximately 2.5% of the population suffers from some aspect of bipolar disorder, which can profoundly compromise one’s life on numerous levels, including relationships, employment, education, activities and more.
There are four primary types of bipolar disorder. They all involve evident changes in mood, energy and activity levels. These moods range from periods of extreme “up”, elated and animated behavior, defined as manic episodes to profoundly sad, “down” or hopeless periods, defined as depressive episodes. Less severe manic periods are known as hypomanic episodes.
- Bipolar I Disorder— Manic episodes that last at least 7 days; or by manic symptoms that are so severe that immediate hospital care is required. Often, depressive episodes accompany the manic episode, as well, typically lasting 2 or more weeks.
- Bipolar II Disorder— Repeated depressive episodes and hypo-manic episodes, however these are not the full-blown manic episodes described above.
- Cyclothymic Disorder (also called cyclothymia)— Numerous periods exhibiting hypo-manic symptoms combined with numerous periods of depressive symptoms lasting for 2+ years. However, the symptoms fail to meet the diagnostic requirements of a hypo-manic episode and a depressive episode.
Other Specified/Unspecified Bipolar and Related Disorders— Bipolar disorder symptoms that do not match the three above categories.
