MENTAL HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Other Process Addictions
For some people, mental health disorders are accompanied by process addictions. These co-occurring addictions require specific, focused treatment to break the addictive cycle, alleviate psychological suffering and treat symptoms.
Solara Mental Health provides the specialized treatment for process addiction in San Diego. The process begins with an in-depth assessment, including consultation with outpatient care providers and loved ones, to gain a full, nuanced understanding of each client’s symptoms and struggles. Our expert clinicians use a unique combination of individual psychotherapy, group therapy, holistic therapies, twelve-step peer support groups and as-needed psychotropic therapy. This combination of therapeutic modalities helps clients face symptoms head-on and build the framework for lasting recovery, building a life that is stable, rich, and joyful.
Co-Occurring Healing
The term “process addictions” refers to a variety of damaging, even self-destructive, behaviors. Process addictions can include shopping addiction, Internet addiction, and compulsive eating. Regardless of the specific addiction, these compulsive behaviors threaten the physical, emotional, interpersonal, financial, and psychological stability of those struggling. Although process addictions do not include substance abuse, the addictions that come from process disorders can be just as difficult to resist as alcohol or drugs and can cause drastic symptoms.
Symptoms include the following:
- All-consuming compulsion to participate in the addictive behavior
- Re-arranging everything around participation in the behavior or ignoring other duties in order to partake in more of the behavior
- Feelings of ecstasy or joy when engaging in the behavior
- Continuing the behavior even when doing so has drastic negative consequences, or when the consequences get progressively worse
- Keeping the behavior a secret from loved ones
- Not being able to stop the behavior (even if you want to)
These symptoms can be worsened by a pre-existing mental health disorder, such as anxiety or depression. Addictive behaviors can exacerbate feelings of panic or mental distress associated with a mental health disorder, which in turn can feed increased addictive behavior creating a painful, destructive cycle that is difficult to break. This cycle can be aggravated by misunderstanding and isolation. Process addictions are often misdiagnosed or misunderstood, written off as a lack of self-control or inherent character flaws. When this happens, feelings of hopelessness and isolation increase and those suffering from process disorders feel increasingly unable to overcome their addictions and recover, only worsening the cycle.
