Relational Therapy
Interpersonal relationships, good and bad, are highly influential in a person’s life. Relational therapy seeks to explore these social influences, seeing how they effect a person’s psychological wellbeing and contribute to mental or emotional distress. Relational therapy is founded on the belief that meaningful, healthy social connections are a basic human need. And as such, we strive to help people find the roots of their distress and learn skills to strengthen both current and future relationships. Our relational therapy in San Diego does just that. Through this process, veterans learn how relationships affect their mental health disorder and come to a better understanding of themselves and their needs.
Sociocultural Awareness
An important component of relational therapy is the development of sociocultural awareness. This is a social constructivist theory that studies how power dynamics between people are shaped by race, gender, class and sexual orientation, and by extent, how the culture that someone grows up in shapes their worldview and interactions with others. A greater sense of sociocultural awareness can help veterans reframe and better understand interactions with others, as well as self-reflect on their own actions.
Widely Applicable
Relational therapy is a flexible treatment that can be helpful in treating people with a variety of mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, trauma disorders and personality disorders. The focus on sociocultural awareness can also be useful in treating psychotic disorders.
Therapist-Patient Relationship
In conjunction with other therapeutic modalities, Solara Mental Health utilizes relational therapy to create the most effective treatment experience possible for veterans. The expert clinicians at our mental health treatment center will work with veterans to build strong relationships centered on mutual trust, support, and respect, setting a model that veterans can aim to replicate in other relationships. A strong therapist-patient relationship can help all veterans find both immediate and long-term security and relief as they develop the skills needed to identify positive and negative relationships and respond accordingly.
