TMS for ADHD

TransCranial Magnetic Stimulation

TransCranial Magnetic Stimulation or TMS is an FDA approved and evidence-based mental health treatment. This treatment uses a medical device that applies magnetic pulses noninvasively to the cortex of the brain to depolarize neurons. 3  Studies have found that TMS is a safe, non-intrusive, and effective way to treat ADHD.

What is ADHD?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder or ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is most common and first diagnosed during childhood. People who have ADHD experience a hard time paying attention, controlling impulsive behaviors, and or be overly active. 1

ADHD is most often identified at a young age because of the disruption they experience in the classroom but is prevalent in teenagers and adults as well.  In the U.S., of the kids from 2-17 years old, 8.4% of them were diagnosed with ADHD while 2.5% of adults in the U.S. were diagnosed with ADHD. 2  Typically, treatment for ADHD includes prescription medication or behavioral therapy but more recently, TMS has become an effective alternative to treat ADHD.

TMS for Childhood ADHD

TMS has proven to be one of the most effective advanced treatments for resolving Childhood ADHD. The most seen effect of having ADHD as a child is problems with the structure and expectations in the classroom. This results in children acting out, poor performance, and difficulty with peers.

The most common way to detect if a child has ADHD is by looking at their behavior in two settings. If a child were to have ADHD, one would notice inattentiveness and/or hyperactivity in school and church, or in activities with family and friends.

Fortunately, TMS has been a great treatment for children with ADHD. TMS treatment benefits include:

  • Healthily manage their emotions
  • Down-regulate during moments of hyperactivity
  • Focus in class and pay attention to teachers
  • Play well with other children
  • Manage the stress associated with ADHD

TMS for Teenage ADHD

Although ADHD is most likely developed in children ages 5-12, it can still be diagnosed in teenagers. ADHD impairs one’s ability to exert voluntary control over his/her attention. This means that teens struggle with controlling their attention and focusing capacities. Not only does this mean teens struggle with focusing their attention but this also includes their struggle with hyper-focus. Hyperfocus refers to an intense fixation or interest in an activity for an extended period of time.

Symptoms in teens may often be misdiagnosed because of how common the symptoms are in today’s generation. A lot of the time symptoms like. Depression or anxiety are confused with ADHD. This misdiagnosis can result in the improper prescription of ADHD medication which can affect their development.

TMS for teens was found to be safe and effective to treat ADHD in young adults, with no detrimental effects. 3 TMS showed improvements in:

  • Managing their schedule
  • Studying effectively
  • Minimize/avoid risky behavior
  • Take medication as prescribed
  • Cope with the unique stressors of being a teen with ADHD
  • Plan ahead and set life goals

TMS for Adult ADHD

Although rare, adult ADHD does affect some adults. ADHD persists into adulthood in approximately 10 to 60 percent of individuals diagnosed in childhood. 4 Symptoms of adult ADHD can be very similar to that of childhood ADHD but symptoms tend to be less intense and may decrease with time. One of the most notable symptoms of adult ADHD is hyperactivity. The reason for it being one of the most notable is not because of how extreme it is but how less salient it is in adults. 5

Some of the symptoms that adults experience with ADHD are:

  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Difficulty paying attention
  • Short-term memory

Evidence of DTMS shows useful results in modulating the prefrontal cortex which is the primary goal of treating ADHD with TMS.6
TMS has proved to be highly effective in resolving Adult ADHD:

  • Increased capacity to focus on important tasks
  • Decreased feelings of jitteriness and worry
  • Improved organizational strategies
  • Greater efficiency in your work and recreation
  • Feelings of confidence and control
